How To Stop Your Floors From Squeaking

Question:

Help! I just moved into a new house and I have squeaky floors. How do I fix them?

Answer:

Great question. There’s often that one spot on a floor that creaks and groans. But there doesn’t have to be. With the right construction adhesive you can eliminate unpleasant squeaks in both new and existing hardwood floors.
A few simple steps can be taken to prevent or repair squeaky floors in homes.

New Construction

Step 1.

Apply a 1/4 –inch continuous line (bead) of construction adhesive such as LIQUID NAILS® Subfloor and Deck Construction Adhesive (LN-902) along joists before laying your chosen flooring. When laying hard floors, you will need to apply the adhesive as you work across the floor, one board at a time. For 4’ x 8’ construction materials (sheathing), adhesive can be applied to larger sections at a time.

Step 2.

Fasten sheathing as recommended with desired fasteners.

Step 3.

Allow 24-48 hours for the adhesive to dry before heavy foot traffic.

For Existing Floors

Step 1.

Identify accessible floor joints from the underside of your floor. Note that not all floor joists will be accessible.

Step 2.

Apply a 1/4 –inch bead of construction adhesive such as Liquid Nails Subfloor and Deck Construction Adhesive along each side of joists as tight to the flooring as possible.

Step 3.

Allow 24-48 hours for the adhesive to dry.
